THE BIDASOA IS EVERYBODY’S BUSINESS
The voluntary group “AIZKOLEGI TALDEA” was created in 1999-2000 as a result of a seminar given by EA in the
Bertiz
Palace
for the people of the region.
The Bidasoa crosses through the various valleys of the Cantabrian area of
Navarre
, and joins the towns together.
Aizkolegi Taldea chose to make the BIDASOA the objective of its environmental activities.
OBJECTIVES
Promote the creation of networks to improve the condition of the
Bidasoa
River
.
Inform the population about the difficulties faced by this river.
Generate a relationship between the inhabitants of the region and the
Bidasoa
River
.
Improve the condition of the river in terms of the cleanliness, appearance and quality of its water.
Create a dynamic of participation that could be extended to other conservation and environmental improvement initiatives in their broadest sense.
FORECAST ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT
Promote individual and collective participation.
Reduce contamination of natural resources.
Improvement of the appearance of the rural environment.
Particular focus on the awareness of school children, but also the population in general, regarding natural resources and the corresponding difficulties.
Reuse and recycle materials recovered from rivers (lampposts, road signs, etc.).
Reinforce campaigns about recycling implemented by local entities and improve the management of the current systems of selective collection and recycling.
WE BELIEVE THAT THE PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS ARE BEING ACHIEVED
But we know that more people can participate….
That the level of awareness can and should improve...
That there continue to be residues in the river and that means that there are people putting them there,...
ATTRACTING VOLUNTEERS
The project is aimed at local inhabitants in general, but particular efforts are made to implicate:
- Local entities
- Schools
- Associations
The following methods are used to attract volunteers:
Advertising (local press, radio and television, publication and distribution of an information leaflet and a calendar),...
Meetings (in the case of local entities: Town Councils, Communities, etc.)
Annual school drawing competition with the Bidasoa as the subject (this is also performed with the aim of deciding on the poster for the campaign), exhibitions in Parque de Bertiz (
Bertiz
Natural
Park
) of the pieces entered.
Bertso competition with the same theme.
Collaboration with the World Environmental Day (organization of the 1st Photographic Rally of Parque de Bertiz)
TRAINING OF VOLUNTEERS
Work groups in various towns and villages (Baztan-Malerreka and Bortziriak) are organized for the
Bidaosa
River
cleaning day. Each group has one or two leaders that are responsible for giving participants a short talk about the objective of the activities and how the work should be performed: the types of residues that may be found, their separation into different coloured bags, precautions to be taken, etc. and the selective collection process that will be carried out from the banks of the river to the corresponding bins.
VOLUNTEERS’ TASKS
The organization of tasks and the different work to be carried out throughout the year is performed by the voluntary Aizkolegi Taldea group in collaboration with the Bertiz Tourist Consortium (which is the association that presents the project) and Parque de Bertiz.
This group is formed by approximately 10 people who work together during the entire year.
The majority of volunteers participate in the clean-up day. Approximatley 200-250 people come back each year. These people are divided into a total of 8-10 organised groups in 8-10 areas. Apart from their cleaning work, these volunteers also collaborate in the organization of the clean-up day.
EVOLUTION OF THE PROJECT
It was commenced in 2001 and has been gaining in popularity ever since with town councils, communities, schools and local inhabitants in general.
On conclusion of the annual activities, the group performs an evaluation to correct errors and ensure an even better performance for the following year.
It is not an easy task to attract people to and raise awareness of this cause, but little by little progress is being made.
